Repair or Replace? Getting the Most Life Out of a Haul-Truck Tray
If the tray’s structure is still sound, a repair or refurbishment almost always beats replacement on cost, and can add years of service. Once the main structure is fatigued or cracking through, replacement becomes the safer, smarter call. The trick is catching wear early and getting an honest assessment.
A haul-truck tray is one of those things you don’t think about until it’s costing you. Then it’s a crack creeping along a floor plate, or wear that’s eaten through the liners and started on the body itself, and you’ve got a call to make: patch it up, refurbish it, or replace the whole thing?
We repair and refurbish trays out of our Mackay workshop, and we’ll tell you straight, replacing a tray that could’ve been repaired is money down the drain, but flogging a tray that’s past it is a safety risk. Here’s how we think about the call.
What actually kills a tray
Three things, mostly. Wear, the slow grind of loading and dumping, shift after shift. Cracking fatigue from years of impact and flex, usually starting at stress points and welds. And impact damage, the oversize rock or the bad dump that puts a tear where it shouldn’t be. Wear and isolated cracks are very repairable. It’s when cracking spreads through the main structure that the maths changes.
When a repair makes sense
If the tray’s core structure is sound and the problem is wear, a handful of cracks, or localised damage, a repair or refurbishment is almost always the better buy. New wear packages, crack repairs, a bit of structural work, a repain, and you’ve got a tray back in service for a fraction of replacement cost, often with years left in it. That’s the bread and butter of what we do.
When replacement is the smarter call
There’s a point where you’re chasing cracks faster than you can weld them, or the main structure is fatigued right through. Keep repairing past that and you’re spending good money on a tray that’ll keep coming back, and risking a failure you don’t want on a loaded truck. When we see that, we’ll tell you. We’d rather lose the repair job than put you back in service on something that shouldn’t be.
How to get more life out of your trays
The operators who get the most out of their trays do the same few things. They fit and maintain proper wear packages, so the body itself takes less punishment. They catch cracks early, before a hairline becomes a structural problem. And they get trays assessed properly rather than guessing a tray that looks rough can have plenty left, and one that looks fine can be cracking where you can’t see it.
